Cookie policy

This site sets no cookies. That is the whole policy; the rest of this page explains what it means, what happens instead, and what we would have to do before that ever changed.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store and to send back on later visits, which is how a site can recognise a returning browser. Cookies are used for useful things such as keeping you signed in, and for less welcome ones such as following a person's browsing across different websites.

What this site does

Protective Shield sets no cookies of its own, and allows no third party to set cookies through it. There is no analytics cookie, no advertising cookie, no conversion pixel, no tracking script, no social media embed, no session identifier and no preference cookie. Nothing on this site attempts to recognise you between visits or to follow you to another website.

Because nothing is stored on your device, there is nothing for you to consent to, and so there is no cookie banner here. A consent banner on a site that sets no cookies would be a statement that is not true, and would ask you to agree to something that is not happening.

What happens instead

• Server logs. The hosting provider that runs the server records ordinary request information: the IP address, the browser's user agent string, the URL requested, the response status, and the date and time. This is how any web server operates and it does not involve storing anything on your device. Retention periods are stated in the privacy policy.
• A font request to Google. The two typefaces used here are loaded from Google Fonts. Your browser requests the stylesheet and the font files from Google's servers, and Google receives your IP address as an unavoidable part of that request being made. No cookie is set by that request, and no information comes back to us. Google describes its handling of data in its privacy policy. If you would rather this request did not happen, blocking fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com leaves the site entirely readable in a system typeface.

Browser storage and fingerprinting

This site does not use localStorage, sessionStorage or IndexedDB, and stores nothing in your browser by any other means. The only script running here is a short first-party file that opens the navigation menu and the question panels; it is unminified and readable at /assets/main.js, it makes no network request, and it writes nothing anywhere. We do not perform browser fingerprinting, canvas fingerprinting or any equivalent technique, and no third-party code capable of doing so is loaded on any page.

Controlling cookies in your browser anyway

Whatever any individual site does, your browser controls what is stored. Every major browser has a privacy or site-data section in its settings where existing cookies can be cleared, cookies can be blocked altogether or restricted to the site you are on, and third-party cookies can be refused. The exact wording differs by browser and version, and the browser's own help pages are the reliable guide. Blocking cookies entirely will break sites that rely on them for signing in; it will have no effect at all on this one.

If this ever changes

We do not intend to introduce cookies. If that position ever changes, three things happen before any cookie is set: this page is rewritten to describe each cookie, its purpose and its lifetime; the privacy policy is updated to match; and a working consent mechanism is put in place, with no non-essential cookie set until consent is given. A tag would not be added first and disclosed afterwards.
